Area rugs are a lot like clothing accessories: they aren’t essential, but they sure do help take your style to the next level. Without a rug, rooms can feel cold, haphazardly designed, or drab.
Because area rugs run the gamut in material, style, size, and price, these decorative elements are among the easiest to incorporate into almost any space. Simply adding a rug to a room’s decor can drastically alter its look and feel while serving as a much more cost-effective way to update a space than, say, purchasing entirely new furnishings.
With that said, people are still often surprised to learn that the rooms in their homes are essentially unfinished without the addition of an area rug of some sort. If you’re still not sold, here are five reasons your room needs an area rug.
1. Rugs tie a room together.
Interior Design 101: all rooms need an anchor. Anchors not only draw the eye, they also help to pull all of a room’s decorative elements together. While a rug isn’t the only way to anchor your room, they certainly help get the job done.
Probably one of the places wherein a missing rug is most apparent is the living room. It’s important to select a properly-sized rug that sits just beneath the edges of sofas, chairs, or coffee tables that are placed together. Without one, the furniture will just look… randomly placed.
By the way, here’s a tip: runner rugs placed in transitional areas between rooms can actually help tie the entire house together, too.
2. Rugs help create warmth.
So, this may be stating the obvious, but placing an area rug in a room helps the room feel warmer. But we don’t just mean “warm” in the temperature sense. Area rugs help rooms feel more inviting, too.
Think about it – when you visit a friend’s home for the first time to find that they have a nice, big, plush rug beneath a well-situated sitting area, you immediately feel drawn in and comfortable. If you live in a home with hardwood flooring, tile, or stained concrete throughout, it is even more important that you be sure to place rugs around the house. Trust us, you’ll get tired of walking on cold, hard surfaces without them.
3. Rugs are easier to clean than wall-to-wall carpet.
Within the past 10 to 15 years, wall-to-wall carpet has fallen out of favor in comparison to more manageable area rugs. Rugs are just easier to clean, plain and simple. Many, especially detachable rugs, are so easy to clean, you can even put them in the washing machine. These two-piece detachable rug systems are perfect for anyone who’s more sensitive to dust and other allergens that accumulate in carpet fibers over time. Honestly, who wouldn’t love a washable farmhouse rug like this in their home?
Let’s face it – life is busy. And if you have children and pets, life is very, very busy. Instead of investing thousands of dollars in wall-to-wall carpet, it may be a quicker, more cost-effective option to go with an area rug instead. However, even those with wall-to-wall carpet will often put down area rugs as a way of protecting that bigger investment.
4. Rugs help reduce noise
The more soft surfaces you have in your home, the more noise reduction you’ll enjoy. Certainly, having rugs on your floors will cut down on the noise of people walking about throughout the house, but rugs also help to slow down sound waves travelling through the air. If you live in a home with hard floors, a runner rug is especially helpful for cutting down on noise from people travelling through hallways and corridors.
This all goes back to practicality purposes. Our homes should be our havens, so you need to do what you can to make yours as comfortable as possible. If you have kids, we’d be willing to bet noise reduction would be a big plus. This is also helpful if you work from home, or perhaps have a newborn who you don’t want to awaken.
5. Rugs add an artistic element to rooms
We would be remiss if we didn’t state another obvious point. Here’s a newsflash: rugs are decorative!
Rugs come in so many diverse styles, prints, materials, and sizes that you can quite literally find anything to suit your tastes. Like anything else decorative, an accent rug can not only enhance the look and feel of your room, it can also serve as another mode of expression for you. If you’re a traditionalist, you’ll likely love something like this unique chic rug. On the other hand, if you prefer to trek on the wild side, you might prefer something like this beautiful Zebra print area rug. Either way, accent rugs are just another way for you to flaunt your sense of style.
